Shallow prayer

i read this today.   it is from a franciscan benediction…a simple prayer offered for another person:

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain in to joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.

the depth of this prayer blows me away.    it plowed up the shallow ground of my normal prayers.   this is how i should be praying for others.   i hope someone is praying this kind of prayer for me.

…your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.

is that becoming a reality for you?

  1. So uncomfortable right now. I’m stuck in the land of comfort & safety (I have my reasons).

This example prayer is awesome and full of wisdom. Maybe that’s what I’m missing; wisdom.

I have a hard time wanting to pray for anyone’s discomfort, no matter the reasons. Doesn’t life bring enough without asking God for more?

    No resolution. Still uncomfortable.

  2. don’t knock praying the bathroom…many a humble prayer has been prayed in the solace of the shower 🙂 I think if we are uncomfortable then we are right where God needs us to be…i’m not saying it’s fun or that i enjoy it (trust me) but I think the scripture is clear that His power is made perfect in our weakness. that being said praying in the manner of the prophets – Ezekiel and Jeremiah – can lead one to a place of action or despair – i think action is a tough one but a mandate we have to be ready to fulfill.
