Marriage Tuesday

i was reading an article today about the main causes of divorce in our society.   there was nothing real surprising about the list:

  • sexual unfaithfulness
  • communication breakdown
  • physical,  psychological or emotional abuse
  • financial pressures
  • sexual incompatibility
  • boredom
  • religious differences
  • parenting differences
  • addictions
  • different priorities
i don’t want to get overly simplistic  (or maybe i should…),  but it seems to me that if a husband and wife would just choose to follow christ and the wisdom of god’s word,  the causes of divorce…at least these causes…would disappear.
according to god’s word:
  • marriage is a sacred covenant…
  • we are to flee from sexual immorality…
  • we are to speak the truth to each other in love…
  • we are to forgive and carry each other’s burdens and pray for each other…
  • we are to act with compassion,  never seek revenge,  and put each other’s needs before our own…
  • we are to be patient and kind with each other…
  • we are to never let the sun go down on our anger…
  • we are to reject the love of money…
  • we are to love people and not things…
  • we are to be generous and take care of those in need…
  • we are to seek god’s kingdom first in everything…
  • we are to invest in the good of others…
  • we are to manage our time well and practice self-discipline…
  • we are to be equally-yoked…
  • we are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices…
  • we are to raise our children according to god’s priorities…
  • we are to live our lives as examples of christlikeness for our children to see…
  • we are to live sober and alert at all times…
  • we are to live humbly…
  • we are to live close to others for help and accountability…
  • we are to do our part as the body of christ…
yup.   pretty much takes care of the causes of divorce.
i was reading another article on statistics of people who choose to live together before they get married.   these are not good:
  • the number of unmarried couples living together soared 12-fold from 430,000 in 1960 to 5.4 million in 2005.
  • more than eight out of ten couples who live together will break up either before the wedding or afterwards in divorce.
  • couples who do marry after living together are 50% more likely to divorce than those who did not.
  • only 12 percent of couples who have begun their relationship with cohabitation end up with a marriage lasting 10 years or more.

people who claim to be to be right with god… should really consider following god’s wisdom,  instead of making up their own private religion.   it’s way better for your marriage.

people who aren’t,  should consider getting right with god…it’s pretty good marriage insurance.

truth.
